Execution of ten Dutch collaborators near Oldeberkoop
On the afternoon of 12 April, Oldeberkoop was liberated by "D" Squadron of the Royal Canadian Dragoons. Later that day, they established a temporary headquarters in the village. The movements of "D" squadron were coordinated from the headquarters. This was also the place where prisoner of war from the immediate surroundings were gathered.
These prisoners of war were often Germans, but sometimes also Dutch who served voluntarily in the Waffen-SS, the NSKK (a paramilitary section of the Nazi party NSDAP) or the Dutch Landwacht. On this 12th of April, ten of these collaborators were brought into the encampment in Oldeberkoop amid great interest. Hatred of people who fought with or for the Germans was strong among most of the Dutch population. A resident of Oldeberkoop described the moment the men were brought in:
"The crowd booed and whistled, some spat, and some could not keep their hands off them. One of them got such a blow to the head that hit made his head spin."Not much later, these POWs were taken away again. Presumably with the aim of taking them to a real prison camp in Vledder. But the men would never get there. All ten of them were shot without trial in the Koepelbos just outside Oldeberkoop.
It was long thought that the Canadians were responsible for these unlawful executions. But by 1995, it became clear that Canadian involvement had been minimal. Stories about the involvement of two former resistance fighters were confirmed when one of them confessed to having fired the shots. In addition to himself, a colleague, a Canadian driver and some men who had dug the graves were present at the execution.
The exact reason for the murder of the Dutch collaborators and the exact role of the two Dutchmen and the Canadian have never been fully clarified. There are different accounts of the events leading up to the shooting. On 14 April, the bodies were finally buried in a mass grave on the side of the road. Later they were transferred to the German war cemetery in Ysselsteyn. The names of most of the victims also became known at that time:

Je zag de typisch blauwe kleur waarschijnlijk al van verre: het dak van het zeegemaal dat hier sinds 1973 staat en genoemd is naar waterschapsvoorzitter Henk Miedema. Dit gemaal kan tot 700 kubieke meter per minuut water vanuit de vaart in zee lozen. Als je hier even blijft staan, kun je zomaar het gemaal horen aanslaan, want die schakelt automatisch in.
Een geweldige uitvinding dus, een gemaal, maar er zit ook een nadeel aan. Gemalen zijn namelijk net als dijken en sluizen een grote hindernis voor trekvissen, omdat zij voor hun overleving tussen zoet en zout water moeten kunnen migreren. In 2015 is dit gemaal visvriendelijk gemaakt, door de pompen aan te passen en een vispassage met een lokstroompomp te maken.
Jammer genoeg is het niet te zien, maar in het voor- en najaar is het hier een drukte van belang op vissengebied. Trekvissen als spiering, trekkend driedoornig stekelbaarsje en paling maken dan gebruik van het vismigratiesysteem in het gemaal.
Instinct drijft volwassen palingen hier in de herfst naar het einde van de Kouwe Faart toe, omdat ze naar de zoute Waddenzee willen. Een waaier beschermt ze als ze met het uitstromende water mee de zee in worden gepompt. Eenmaal in zee zit hun reis er nog lang niet op. Ze leggen maar liefst 5000 kilometer af naar hun geboortegrond, de Sargassozee bij Mexico, om te paaien.
De jonge palingen die daar worden geboren, glasaaltjes genoemd omdat ze doorzichtig zijn, drijven vervolgens op de golfstromen mee naar Europa. Zo komen ze in de lente onder andere hier achter de dijk terecht. En dan is het hun beurt om dit gemaal te trotseren, nu landinwaarts. Een lokstroom van zoet water helpt hen door een buis onder de dijk door, waar ze hier in de bak onder je voeten terecht komen. Maximaal twee uur later gaat hier onder water een schuif open. En zo begint de kringloop van het leven opnieuw.

Een klein duwtje of idee kon uitmonden in een zee van gedachten en inspiratie. Hij was een diesel, met een enorme drive en noodzaak, dat maak je zelden mee. Mensen als Joop zijn nodig om de grenzen te verleggen en nieuw horizonnen te creeëren. Zij doen een leven en samenleven enorm verrijken.”
