For more than 25 years, Art Connection – celebrating its 40th anniversary this year – has organised a vibrant art and culture festival in the heart of Leeuwarden. What began as a small art market with around twelve artists in the 1990s has grown into a true cultural celebration, featuring around 60 artists, a fine art and antiques appraisal, and a live afternoon concert. The festival consists of three interwoven elements. The art market brings together around 60 artists from across the northern Netherlands, representing a wide range of contemporary art forms, from oil paintings, watercolours, realism and abstract art to tattoo art. Many artists are offering special festival prices, making it an excellent opportunity to purchase original artwork. Visitors can also have works of art or antiques professionally assessed during Between Treasures & Trinkets, the Frisian answer to the popular television programme Tussen Kunst & Kitsch. After registering in advance, you can bring along your own artwork or antique to be discussed by an art expert. The appraisals take place from 12.00 pm at Tapas Restaurant 't Zusje on Zaailand. Advance booking is recommended. More information can be found on Art Connection's website under Art & Culture Markets.
From 2.00 pm, enjoy a live concert in or outside Thús, the restaurant at the Fries Museum. The well-known duo Piet Kok (vocals, guitar and harmonica) and Roelof Reinema (guitar) will perform well-loved songs by artists including Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen, alongside folk, blues and country classics. Thanks in part to the cafés and restaurants around Wilhelminaplein, the festival offers a lively mix of art, culture, music and a welcoming atmosphere. On Saturday 22 August, Art Connection will also announce its 2026–2027 concert programme, with performances taking place at both the WestCord WTC Hotel and the historic Kanselarij in Leeuwarden. ART Leeuwarden is free to visit on Saturday 22 August, from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm. With its relaxed atmosphere and lively café terraces, it's an event well worth visiting.
