This event is part of 150 Years of Mata Hari. This anniversary year is celebrated in Leeuwarden with art, dance, theatre, parties, exhibitions, tours, and much more. The programme runs from May 23 to August 7 (Mata Hari’s birthday) and can be found here.
As a child, Mata Hari—then still known as Greetje—would gaze through the display windows of her father’s hat shop at the vast world beyond. Passersby drifted past: businessmen in long coats, mothers juggling lively children, hurried travellers, and those with endless time on their hands. From an early age, it shaped her view of life—a life she believed could be grander and more captivating than the everyday.
During the immersive (that is: all around you) light experience Echoes of Mata Hari by artist duo Kroft&Smids (known for projects such as Decemberlicht), you’ll experience Mata Hari’s story—from her birth in the Frisian capital to the moment fate caught up with her in France. The performance lasts approximately 15–20 minutes and is free to attend.
Please note: Echoes of Mata Hari is an intimate, immersive experience that can be enjoyed by only ten people at a time. Be sure to reserve your spot in advance!
