Story by Henk Rigter
Henk Rigter shares the tale behind Doutzen Cruise, his debut book about travelling through Africa with three Frisian friends in a beat-up van.
“The three of us set off for South Africa in a rattling old van, convinced we could make it in three months. But after three months, we were only in Istanbul — and that delay turned into a journey of almost three years.”
"That’s because we had the kind of adventures you only find in boys’ adventure books. We supported good causes, accidentally invented the concept of Guerrilla Volunteering, bought a dog
under a bridge in Cairo, and clashed a little too often with the authorities which, of course, led to chaos."
“And God, the people we met… they coloured the entire story.”
So, expect a shrill tale of how three boys became more than just friends, how they came face to face with themselves, and how the world hit back.
Henk promises a great ride.

Zinday Afternoon Talk Show – with Peng Zhang
Today we welcome Chinese artistPeng Zhang, artist-in-residence at Bouwurk during Arcadia. Peng grew up in a farming family in southern China and interweaves the agricultural culture of his youth with contemporary art. From his garden on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof — which also serves as his studio — he explores how we, as humans, relate to the earth through sculptures, paintings, crops, and scents.
His guiding principle? The traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, which doesn’t divide the year into months or weeks, but into 24 solar terms. With this, he introduces a different sense of time to Leeuwarden — one in which seasons, fleeting moments of joy, and cosmic rhythms take centre stage. In this conversation, we’ll explore Peng’s artistic process, his experiences so far, and how this centuries-old calendar shapes his daily life and creative work.
