Stap into Dovenland (Deaf Land): a virtual world without sound

Take a look

Welcome to Dovenland (Deaf Land). A place where the deaf feel at home and you as a hearing person are warmly welcomed.

Two languages are spoken in this country. Dutch Sign Language first and Dutch for everything else that needs to be said. Enter this hybrid form of VR (Virtual Reality) and theatre, technologically developed in collaboration with Jan Klug, to experience together the world in which you, as a hearing person, cannot easily make yourself understood. Sound and spoken language do not play the main role, but communication does. How do you introduce yourself or order a cup of coffee? Can you just tap everyone on the shoulder when you want their attention? Instead, as a member of this community, you step into a warm bath of recognition and see everyday subtleties magnified.

Dovenland is a Virtual Reality experience you can physically walk around in. Seven participants at a time step into a virtual world, which stands as an augmented reality layer in the real world. The playing field is marked by a rug, where participants step into a parallel world. Without sound, but with all kinds of layers of communication, with its own history, culture and people.

This event will take place at the White Box in Bouwurk on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof in Leeuwarden, Friesland.
