Bach and His Musical Circle

This year, Leeuwarden’s city organistTheo Jellema once again dedicates a concert series to JohannSebastian Bach and the musical world around him. The theme he has chosen is “Bach, inspiration and imitation.”

Across eight concerts on various organs in the municipality of Leeuwarden, you'll hear not only works by Bach himself but also compositions by those who inspired him — according to the accounts of Bach’s own sons. Naturally, this includes older contemporaries such asBuxtehude and Böhm, as well as early Baroque composers like Froberger and Frescobaldi.

Followers of Bach featured in the series include both his direct pupils and 19th-century composers. While many of them were German, Bach’s influence also reached into France, inspiring composers there as well.

This series promises to be richly varied — a true exploration of inspiration across generations
