The Young Solar Challenge is an innovative educational project in which secondary school students build their own solar-powered boat and compete in thrilling races at the end of the season. Once every three years, something extra special is on the agenda: The Ultimate Solar Boat Challenge — the Elfstedentocht!
During this unique edition, teams from the Netherlands and abroad — and across multiple levels, from lower secondary (RC-Solar Class) and upper secondary (Young Solar Class) to universities, colleges, and companies (Apprentice & Master Class) — sail past the eleven Frisian cities.
The route is spread over two extended weekends and focuses on technology, sustainability, and above all: teamwork powered by the sun. It’s a sporting and educational challenge that leaves a lasting impression on both participants and spectators.
On Friday 23 May (Young Solar Class) and Thursday 4 June (Apprentice & Master Class), the teams will start with a running start from the Elfstedenhal, launching their boats from Swettehaven (James Wattstraat).
All classes will finish on Saturday 7 June at De Groote Wielen.
