Discover the impact of the dairy industry in Fryslân

Take a look

Tsiis Gers Grûn
Each summer, the fire engine of art initiative VHDG tours the Frisian countryside, visiting villages and towns with a striking art programme. This year, artist duo Suzanne Bernhardt and Philipp Kolmann are joining our Travelling Studio. With their project Tsiis Gers Grûn, they explore the plant-based revolution in food and food production. In the future, our diets will include more and more plant-based foods — but how do we preserve the knowledge and tradition of dairy production?

In July, they’ll travel through grasslands, farms, a wool spinning mill, and a cheese maker, and they’ll also dive into the world of bacteria and soil life. You can find them this summer in three locations: in Mirns by the IJsselmeer, in Veenhuizen in Drenthe, and along the Frisian Wadden Sea dyke. There, you can meet the artists and join them in their discoveries and tastings.

On 13 July, Suzanne and Philipp will park the Travelling Studio on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof near Arcadia’s Bouwurk. Since the rise of the dairy industry, the landscape has changed dramatically. Grasses now dominate the Frisian landscape, but this has come at the cost of biodiversity. At the same time, fewer animals can be seen in the meadows, even though dairy production continues unabated.

What might our countryside look like in the future, when animals are once again abundant and a rich variety of grasses returns? On this day, you’ll have the chance to meet the artists and take part in various art activities. Open to all ages and free of charge.
