In her new cabaret show Deer, Nathalie Baartman explores what is truly dear to her. She speaks of sorrow and life, of the beast within humans — and of the animals themselves.
Deer means "deer" in English, dier (animal) in Twents, and it also echoes heart. Because what touches you, affects you — it deert you.
Baartman presents a personal and philosophical performance, full of warm humour and quirky observations. She talks about her child, about everything that walks on two or four legs, hatches from an egg or wears glasses. Everything that matters. Everything that moves you.
With her Twents background and sensitive perspective, she looks at the world around her. In Deer, she weaves the absurd into the everyday, the light with the heavy. She takes life to heart — and shows how, in the end, it all works out.
Her previous show SNAK received glowing reviews. NRC praised it as a strong eighth performance with delightfully absurd songs and striking one-liners. Scènes saw a cabaret performer who skilfully balances the light and the serious, with a storytelling style that truly moves. De Volkskrant wrote that the audience should feel lucky to have Nathalie Baartman, while Theaterkrant lauded her unique perspective and beautiful songs.
Deer is a performance that connects, moves, and makes you smile.
