The Hedgerow of Bouwurk

Leeuwarden

Iconic feature of the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden

Take a look

The hedgerow of Bouwurk is a collaboration with the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân.

In the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden (Northern Frisian Woodlands), you’ll find many hedgerows – densely planted rows of shrubs and trees that traditionally separate pastures. These iconic features are not only beautiful, but also serve as vital habitats for birds, insects, and small mammals. At the edge of Bouwurk, you’ll find such a hedgerow too, providing a natural boundary between a part of Bouwurk and the bustle of the city.

Hedgerows are a defining feature of the National Landscape Noardlike Fryske Wâlden – a unique cultural landscape in Fryslân. These centuries-old green walls support biodiversity, prevent erosion, retain water, and offer shelter and food to livestock. They are essential to preserving the balance between nature and agriculture in this region.

Together with local farmers, the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden Association helps maintain and strengthen these natural heritage features. This not only supports sustainable farming practices but also safeguards the identity and heritage of this exceptional landscape for future generations.

The hedgerow can be admired in the outdoor Oase of Bouwurk, located at Oldehoofsterkerkhof in Leeuwarden, Fryslân.
