Imagine this: someone you vaguely know through other people has cycled into the water and died. Can you still have your birthday party that evening, or should you cancel it out of respect? And what if you’ve never even spoken to them, but you spend the whole day crying because the news has affected you so deeply – is that inappropriate? Because there are other people who have much more reason to cry than you do?
Rieneke has cycled into the water. In Steen in de vijver, we follow a group of young people who have just heard the news about Rieneke. How do they deal with it? Not all of them knew her well. And yet the news hits them like a bombshell. The realisation that a life can suddenly be over leads to life-changing insights, unexpected choices and uncomfortable questions.
The site-specific performance Steen in de vijver takes place in the Leeuwarden-Oost neighbourhood: in a park, in a car park, by a garden gate and in a children’s playground. In small groups, you walk from one scene to the next.
