Atze Jan de Vries of Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken takes us on a journey through the rich history of churches and cathedrals — buildings that have survived revolutions, wars, and centuries of rulers, generals, and graveyards, some dating all the way back to the 12th century.

If churches could speak, what would they say? And now that some of them are no longer in use, what would they ask us? Perhaps: What still binds you together? And what could?

How do we find joy in journalism again in a time of fragmentation, mistrust, and news fatigue? Cynicism is never far off, but this talk chooses another path: one of good cheer — as feeling, direction, and meaning.

Daniëlle Arets invites us on a journey in search of new meaning in journalism. Inspired by the playful spirit of the Fluxus art movement, insights from gamification, and a design-driven approach, she offers a fresh perspective on the field: journalism as a way to make meaning together — to co-create the world around us.

Don’t expect easy answers, but rather an invitation to play, wonder, and rediscover joy in the journalistic craft.

Daniëlle Arets is Professor of Journalism & Design at Fontys School of Journalism in Tilburg. Her research group — including AI experts, artists, journalists, anthropologists, and designers — works together to imagine and shape the future of journalism.
