Fauna XXtraordinaire
Leeuwarden
An extraordinary animal landscape illustrated by two very different artists: Stern Nijland and OC Hooymeijer
Take a look
OC Hooymeijer, winner of the Gerrit Benner Prize 2021, possesses a remarkable inner world. His books about Non-Existent Birds invite a sense of wonder and imagination. At De Utrecht, OC Hooymeijer presents, among other things, a cabinet filled with variations of bird nests. The reconstructed nest of the Snowcracker, built from oyster shells, does not fit inside the cabinet and instead occupies the entire new wing of De Utrecht.
Stern Nijland works from observation and detail. Based on her recent illustrations, she has created three dioramas that draw visitors into a wondrous natural world. Once you begin wandering through her richly illustrated encyclopaedias for children, there is no turning back. Recent publications include The Book of Animal Death and Human and Animal, from Designer Dog to Shark Swimsuit.
Children’s books are certainly not only interesting for children, emphasises Fryslân’s Berneboeke Ambassador, Tialda Hoogeveen, who initiated this project together with De Utrecht. Here, the interplay between writer, illustrator, designer and reader is given a mature stage.
During Fauna XXtraordinaire, various activities will take place, including the Silent Book Club foar Bern on Sunday 12 October, a Storytelling Evening on 21 November, and during Explore the North on 22 and 23 November, Stern Nijland and others will read aloud.
In addition, a pamphlet designed by BW H designer Esther Jansma is available for €10, containing ten postcards featuring work by five Frisian children’s book illustrators and five new poems for children by Frisian writers. The postcards can be purchased at De Utrecht, Afûk and children’s bookshop De Toverlantaarn in Leeuwarden.
