An extraordinary animal landscape illustrated by two very different artists: Stern Nijland and OC Hooymeijer

OC Hooymeijer, winner of the Gerrit Benner Prize 2021, possesses an extraordinary inner world. His books on Non-Existent Birds invite readers into a realm of wonder. AtDe Utrecht, Hooymeijer presents, among other works, a cabinet filled with variations of bird nests. The reconstructed nest of the Sneeuwkraak (Snow Crack), built entirely from oyster shells, doesn’t fit inside the cabinet — it takes over the entire new wing of De Utrecht.
Stern Nijland works from observation and detail, and has created three dioramas from her recent illustrations, drawing visitors into a marvellous natural world. Once you start wandering through her richly illustrated encyclopaedias for children, there’s no turning back. Her recent works include Het Dierendoodboek (The Book of Animal Death) and Mens en Dier, van Designerhond tot Haaienzwempak (Humans and Animals, from Designer Dogs to Shark Swimsuits).
Children’s books are certainly not only for children, emphasises Tialda Hoogeveen, Berneboeke-ambassadeur fan Fryslân (Children’s Book Ambassador of Fryslân), who initiated the project together with De Utrecht. Here, the collaboration between writer, illustrator, designer and reader is given a stage worthy of adults.
During Fauna XXtraordinaire, several activities will take place — such as the Silent Book Club foar Bern (for children) on Sunday 12 October, Verhalenavond (Story Night) on 21 November, and readings by Stern Nijland during Explore the North on 22 and 23 November.
In addition, a beautifully designed folder by BW H designer Esther Jansma is available for €10, containing ten postcards: five by Frisian children’s book illustrators and five featuring new children’s poems by Frisian writers. The postcards are available at De Utrecht, Afûk, and Kinderboekwinkel De Toverlantaarn in Leeuwarden.
