Folkscafé: Folk Tales

During the Folk Tales Afternoon, you’ll be taken on a journey around the world — from Iran to Mexico and Brazil. Three speakers will each share a traditional story in their own language. These are folk tales passed down from generation to generation. Written translations will be available in both Dutch and English.

The storytellers are Stella Arnt Rosa (Brazil), Sarai Escamilla Guadarrama (Mexico), and Negar Jalalifar (Iran). The Folk Tales Afternoon is part of the Folkscafé Meet-ups, where connection and exchange are key. Whether with people from your own culture — helping you feel at home even when far away — or with people from other cultures, each with a unique story that broadens your view of the world.

Folkscafé Meet-ups are created by Explore the North in collaboration with Sedrana. The project is supported by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and Arcadia’s "Over de Drempel" programme.

Every last Sunday of the month, the World Reading Club takes place at dbieb Leeuwarden – a space where people from different languages and cultures come together. For this special occasion, they’re moving to Bouwurk for the day! We invite you to dive into the enchanting world of books. Let’s read together — in any language! How does it work? Simply bring a book from home to read. In between reading, you’re welcome to chat and learn more about one another’s cultures. No sign-up needed – just come along! More information

About Zinday Afternoon
Starting 15 June, every Sunday this summer is a day with purpose. Take the plunge into refreshing, inspiring, funny, and moving stories from both well-known and unheard voices during Zinday Afternoon at Bouwurk, the largest mienskipshûs (community house) of Fryslân.

Ever feel scrolled out or screen-weary? Put your phone down, close your laptop, and come experience the real stuff: real people, real stories, and real conversations you’ll remember for a long time. Zinday Afternoon offers the perfect place for new inspiration, genuine human connection, and a delightful afternoon where time just slips away.
