A dark evening, a beautifully lit museum. During Museum Night FRL, Natuurmuseum Fryslân opens its doors for the Short Film Festival. As part of the De natuur van nu series, you can watch three surprising documentaries.
Vierkant Veldwerk by Okki Poortvliet
Milah van Zuilen, a visual artist and trainee forest ecologist, works with just one shape: the square. Milah’s focus on this man-made shape is her way of exploring how we shape nature to suit our needs. Vierkant Veldwerk was filmed in the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic and in the concrete, square world of Barendrecht in the Netherlands.
Lievelingsboom by Tom Tieman
‘When you see a tree, you see life,’ says arborist and tree enthusiast Bert Plaat. Monumental and unusual trees can be found everywhere, and people often have a special connection with them. In the documentary Lievelingsboom, director Tom Tieman joins Bert Plaat from the Bomenstichting as they visit some of these special trees in the province of Groningen.
Over het Wildrooster by Okki Poortvliet
In Over het Wildrooster, you’ll see and hear from Robert, Rinke and Ytzen, three people who spend every day in the forest between the villages of Odoorn and Exloo. Ytzen and Rinke live in the heart of the forest, while Robert cycles through it every day on his way to work. All three experience the world beyond the cattle grid as a different world from the one on the other side.
Shells and skeletons
Between films, wander through the museum galleries, past enormous skeletons, exotic shells and all kinds of other natural treasures from faraway places and closer to home. Step into the fascinating world of animal mummies and marvel at mummified cats, crocodiles, mice and martens. Finally, take a journey through the underwater world of the Netherlands.
