This exhibition explores the Leeuwarden that was never built: buildings that were designed but never realised, and a city that exists only in drawings, models and development plans. What if these plans had made it beyond the drawing board? What would Leeuwarden look like today?

Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden (HCL) holds dozens of these plans in its collection. The exhibition presents a selection of them, alongside architectural models made available by architects. The main focus is on the city centre. Visitors are invited to consider the question: is it a shame – or perhaps a good thing – that these plans were never realised?

From city towers to a lion pit
