Wolvega - Blesdijke - Lendevallei | Circular Walk 10 of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad Monastery Route

21.0 km

You start off in the centre of the town at Wolvega, yet in no time at all you are ankle-deep in the lush nature of the Lendevallei valley. Today the river Lende (or Linde) flows peacefully through the valley, but in 1825 there was severe flooding. After that, the river was dammed. Today the water flows freely again so this ancient valley is now entering a new phase.

The walk leads you through the De Stroomkant polder landscape to the village of Blesdijke. The village church in Blesdijke marks the spot where for a century Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis at the Maria and Agnes Convent engaged in charitable works. Caring for the sick and the poor and committing to a life of poverty were important tenets of the Order.

Blesdijke was not the only place where Saint Francis left his mark. After the States of Friesland dissolved the monasteries in Friesland and outlawed the Catholic faith in 1580, Catholics in Wolvega formed a parish of Saint Francis and held services in a clandestine church on the Terwisscha family estate in the village of Ter Idzard. In 1745, they were allowed to build a small church out of sight of the main road near the village of Oldeholtpade.

A century later, when Catholics were once again allowed to profess their faith openly in the Netherlands, the Archbishop of Utrecht decided to build a new Catholic church in Wolvega. The church was dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. You will find that there is also a lovely chapel in the graveyard.
