Cycle past historic country houses and estates in Friesland.
This route is part of the Elfstatentocht (Eleven States Tour). The fifth and final part of the tour takes you to Southwest Friesland – a region where historic estates and noble houses are less common. Still, you’ll find a few country estates on the higher sandy soils, especially in the Gaasterland area.

This route is part of the Elfstatentocht (Eleven States Tour). The fifth and final part of the tour takes you to Southwest Friesland – a region where historic estates and noble houses are less common. Still, you’ll find a few country estates on the higher sandy soils, especially in the Gaasterland area.

Feel like royalty in Friesland, because along the way you can spend the night, have lunch and dine in some truly special places. At nearly 85 kilometers, this is quite a ride and may be better split into two days: one eastern loop and one western loop. Either way, cycling through the National Landscape Southwest Fryslân is a treat, with regular stops by the Frisian lakes, ferry crossings or views over Lake IJsselmeer.

Huize Boschoord
Landhuis uit 1871 van Jonkheer van Eysinga met achter het huis de Vegelinbossen waar je prachtig kunt wandelen.
Vegelinbossen Forests
The Vegelinbossen forests were planted on the sand ridge on which the village of St Nicolaasga sits. Mayor Johan Vegilin van Claerbergen arranged for the forests to be planted in 1722. Today this is a beautiful place to go walking, cycling, horse riding.
Hobbe van Baerdt Church in Joure
This church is named after Hobbe van Baerdt, who, as ‘grietman’ (a kind of mayor), presided over the former municipality of Haskerland from 1615 to 1650. The lettering on the decorative pediment over the door says ‘Mr Gritman Hobbe van Baerdt 1644'.
Broek Bell Tower
In the slightly raised waterside graveyard in Broek there is a white wooden bell tower with a four-sided dome roof. The swinging bell was cast by Hendrik Wegewaert in 1600.
Veerpont Rufus (Broek)

Osinga State
The Osinga State is a stately house opposite the church in Langweer, consisting of multiple residential floors, tall windows, and an imposing entrance staircase.
Dijken Bell Tower
The Dijken bell tower stands in a small graveyard that is surrounded by a canal. The wooden bell tower with its four-sided dome roof is reached by walking along a dam with an ornately embellished wooden fence.
Bell tower Teroele
On a small "terp" (mound), surrounded by a "gracht" (moat), stands this bell tower in Teroele.

Vaste Burchtkerk Fortress Church
The substantial tower of this church rises proudly above the Van Coehoorn forest, which is named after the strategist and fortress builder Menno Van Coehoorn, who is buried in a spectacular mausoleum in the church.
Balk
Balk is a large village with many amenities in Southwest Friesland; it is the main town of Gaasterland and is situated along the Elfstedentocht route.
