Herbaijum - Berlikum | Elfstedenpad Hiking Trail: Section 10

(19.8 km)

From Herbaijum it is not far to the Frisian city of Franeker, which once had its own university. You walk a short section of the Slachtedijk, an old sea dike that now runs through fields and meadows where sheep and horses graze.

On arrival in Franeker, you are greeted by an impressive array of monuments including the oldest sports stadium, the oldest working planetarium in the world, and the oldest student café in the Netherlands. There are also beautiful churches, old streets and city defences that are worth seeing!

Heading out of Franeker in a north-easterly direction, the trail takes you past the villages of Schalsum, Boer and Ried and leads you along a monastery trail next to the Beltsumer Wiid canal. You follow this path to the domed Koepelkerk church in Berlikum, where this section of the route ends.
