Schiermonnikoog | Circular Walk 1 of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad Monastery Route
The name Schiermonnikoog refers to the daughter house of a monastery established here in the Middle Ages where the monks wore grey (‘schiere’) habits.
In around 1300 it was possible to walk to the island from the mainland across dry sandbanks and salt marshes. In the late Middle Ages Claercamp monastery, which once stood on the north coast of Friesland, founded a daughter house here.
For five centuries there were no monks on the island. All that remained was a statue of a lay brother near the village hall. But five Cistercian monks recently set up a new monastery in Rijsbergen House on Schiermonnikoog.
The walk across the island offers a rich mix of monastic history, enjoyable hustle and bustle and tranquil nature.
