Easterwierrum - Boazum round trip
This ten-kilometre walking route takes you over narrow paths and bridges through the vast landscape around Easterwierrum and Boazum.
Canal towpaths
The first stretch you walk along the water of the Zwette. Also called Sneekertrekvaart. This is the water connection between Leeuwarden and Sneek. You walk along a so-called 'jaagpad' here. In the 17th century, when Friesland consisted only of waterways, this path was used to pull ships: in other words, to 'hunt'. Now it is a beautiful cycling and walking path.
Nice to know: this water is part of the Elfstedentocht.

Mound villages
This route takes you past two mound villages: Boazum and Easterwierrum. Mounds were built by inhabitants to keep their village, including the church, dry during high water. This was because the two villages sat on the south side of the Middelzee. This was a medieval estuary between (the then non-existent cities of) Bolsward and Sneek, all the way up to the sea. It divided Friesland into 'Westergo' and 'Oostergo'.
Slachtedijk
Boazum and Easterwierrum lie on the Slachte. This is a 42-kilometre old inland dyke that winds from the Wadden coast (near Oosterbierum), through to the village of Raerd. From Boazum and just before Easterwierrum, you walk along the Hegedyk. This road is the former dike.

The Swette was dug as a drainage and boundary ditch between the regions of Oostergo and Westergo after the Middelzee had silted up.

St Martin’s Church Fresco
While restoration work was being carried out at St Martin’s Church in Boazum, a remarkable fresco was discovered. The 12th-century church is one of the oldest Roman churches in Friesland. The fresco is very unusual in that it shows Jesus without a beard.
