Highlights 2022
Together with Friesland, Leeuwarden was the European Capital of Culture 2018, and Arcadia is the first triennial to follow up on this. Arcadia offers 100 summer days of an open-air stage for national and international art makers. Offerings include a wandering forest in the streets of Leeuwarden and an international visual art exhibition in the leafy Oranjewoud, and the most legendary Elfstedentocht (Eleven-city ice-skating tour) since climate change became a thing, which travels through villages and cities as one big celebration.
Arcadia
Bosk | Arcadia

From 7 May - 14 August 2022
A wandering forest, straight through the streets of Leeuwarden. Neighbourhoods, squares and canals become a green stage, with the trees as a backdrop. Not a single day in the same place, because no day is the same in the programme. Over the course of 100 days, the metres-high trees form the backdrop for stories, encounters and performances, created with and for residents. After their expedition, the trees will take root in a new, permanent spot in the Frisian capital in aid of green sustainability. BOSK is a visionary concept by artist Bruno Doedens (SLeM) and the late Joop Mulder (Oerol, Sense of Place).
Tall Ships Races

From 14-17 July 2022
In 2022, the port city of Harlingen will once again host the Tall Ships Races. This historic harbour city is the perfect setting for welcoming these mighty ships. It is Friesland’s only seaport, making it the perfect place for this grand nautical celebration. The city also has proven experience in hosting major events such as the Frisian Harbour Days and the Fishing Days. Activities will be organised on the quay and on the water for the public and the crews during the tall ships’ visit.
