Baukje Scheppink is a calligrapher, designer of handwritten letters and book artist.
On the facade of her studio in Leeuwarden's Vijzelstraat is a famous quote by Jacob Cats, poet-statesman:
De punt van een gaeuwe pen ist felste wapen dat ick ken (Jacob Cats 1577-1660)
(The tip of a fast pen is the sharpest weapon I know)
Inside, she uses these different pens: pointed, broad, homemade or bought, made of steel, wood or flexible plastic and even gold, for peaceful purposes. Baukje constantly moves at the intersection of craft and art. She writes on commission on nameplates and doors, on chalkboards and shop windows, as well as on textiles, and she engraves letters and monograms in glasses. In her atelier, she displays traditional and contemporary calligraphy and lettering art. She usually creates work on paper or canvas. Baukje specialises in making unique artists' books: handwritten and bound. The basis is always the letter, where in her free work the legibility of the text is subordinate to the form.
The atelier is open three afternoons a week, but also on other days by appointment. Just give us a call!
