Tjerk Hiddes tells the fascinating story behind Roptasyl. Today, little remains of the original sluice, but in the 17th century, it syl was a frequent source of disputes between Harlingen and Franeker. The main issue was who was responsible for maintaining the original wooden sluice and who should pay for it.

The name Ropta probably comes from Rodberta, the name of a noble farm that once stood roughly where Ropta State is now located along the Hoarnestreek.

A Modern Water Management Facility
The old sluice has since been replaced by a modern pumping station: the Ropta pumping station. Since 1973, it has discharged excess polder water into the Wadden Sea. A fish passage, constructed in 2001, also allows fish to travel from the Wadden Sea into the inland waterways. This gives species such as eels the opportunity to grow in the Frisian waterways and helps support healthy fish populations.
