Paesens-Moddergat: two villages on the Wadden coast that you mention in one breath.
Back in the day, this Wadden village had a large fishing fleet. So many shrimp were caught here that they even built their own little shrimp factory. On a sunny summer day, you can now stop by for an ice cream.
But on the night of 5 to 6 March 1883, disaster struck Paesens-Moddergat: during a severe storm, 83 fishermen from the village drowned. Almost only the women and children were left behind…
Visit museum ’t Fiskershúske, which tells the story of this tragedy. Staying longer? You’ll find cosy holiday homes and B&Bs in and around Paesens-Moddergat.
Also take a walk along the dike to De Paezemerlannen: a nature area with salt marsh and summer polder, full of water birds. And yes, you can go mudflat hiking from the dike at Paesens-Moddergat too. Proper Wadden fun, boots in the mud.
