Burgum is, by Frisian standards, a fairly large village with almost 10,000 residents.
The village lies in the Frisian forests and the surrounding area is known for its sheltered bocage landscape with hedgerows and wooded banks.
But Burgum has two faces, because it is also a watersports village. On the eastern side of the village lies a large lake: the Burgumermeer. The Prinses Margrietkanaal canal even runs straight through the village. The Hendrik Bulthuis Akwadukt passes underneath this canal, and there is also the bridge called the Burgumerdaam. From Burgum you can easily boat to De Leijen or in the direction of National Park De Alde Feanen.
On the eastern side of the village you’ll find the nature areas Soestpolder and Noordermeer. Around the Ritskeloane there are lovely cycling and riding trails in a quiet, sheltered setting. To the west lies the nature area De Dobben.
A special feature of the area around Burgum is the presence of several “pingo ruins”: circular craters in the landscape left behind from the last Ice Age.
It won’t surprise you that Burgum has plenty to offer: nice shops, welcoming cafés and restaurants, bed & breakfasts, a marina and a holiday park. Fun events are organised too, such as “Moai Fuort”. Burgum even has an observatory and planetarium: the Observeum. High time to visit Burgum!
