Walburga Church in Drogeham

Drogeham

Not a terp, but a geest or gaast (a high sandy ridge) makes this church rise above the village skyline. The medieval church fell into disrepair in the 19th century. Rebuilding was the plan. From The Hague came the instruction to keep the same style as the old church.

In 1876 the church was renewed in Neo-Romanesque style. The new nave was built on the foundations of the old church and shows the full “programme” of a Romanesque village church. The saddle-roof tower is still largely 13th-century.

In January 1877, the renewed Walburga Tsjerke was consecrated. Technically the renovation was successful, but not everyone was happy: there was little light inside, making the space feel rather sombre.
