The Lionserpolder is located between the Frisian terp villages of Jorwert (Jowerd) and Leons (Lions). It is a typical open Frisian pastoral landscape. Part of the polder is managed by Natuurmonumenten (Nature Monuments), while the other part is under private nature management by farmers.

Through the Lionserpolder run ancient creeks, and the old ditch patterns from earlier times are still recognizable in the plots. Additionally, remnants of terpen (artificial dwelling mounds) are visible. The openness and expansiveness, combined with low-lying parcels, make this area particularly suitable for meadow birds. It has been designated as a bird reserve by the government.

With the support of Natuurmonumenten members and in collaboration with farmers, efforts are made to make this polder even more nature-friendly. The water management in the area has been thoroughly addressed, and the water level has been significantly increased. This results in a richer soil life, providing a habitat for many birds.

In the fall, you can often see ruffs, golden plovers, and geese in the Lionserpolder. In the spring, the meadow bird Godwit is among the inhabitants. It is definitely worth visiting the polder!

Natuurmonumenten organizes various excursions to this area annually. More information about these excursions and their schedules can be found under the red button.
