The name refers to the salt extraction that used to take place here: excavated peat was burned, leaving behind raw salt and creating pools. Enjoy all the natural beauty of the lake while sailing, as the Sâltpoel is part of the Natura 2000 area. This European network protects certain animals, plants and their habitats in order to preserve biodiversity.
In the lake are the islands with the iconic names Adam and Eve, where boats can moor. The islands have a special story, as they were once a single island. Erosion and waves separated them: Eve slowly lost ground, while Adam remained largely intact. Rowers tried to save Eve by bringing stones every week and placing a sign saying “Save Eve”. The story reached the province of Fryslân and the De Marrekrite recreation authority, which restored the island together with four other islands to compensate for lost mooring places.
