A substantial church with a beautiful interior. The half-built-in tower with spire and wing walls has shaped the skyline of Ternaard since 1871. Before that, the village had a saddle-roof tower. The church itself also had a predecessor: fragments of tuff stone from that earlier church were reused in the north wall.
If you can, do step inside. The nave holds an exceptionally dignified interior, with fine furnishings mainly from the 17th century. The pulpit, baptism rail and the gentlemen’s pew of the Van Aylva family are all beautifully made. This family lived in two “states” near the village and also has a very large tomb slab in the church. Even the communion table dates back to the Renaissance period. The organ, with an extraordinarily fine case, stands on a gallery with small columns and family coats of arms.Â
