The Ice fountain of Dokkum

“The basic form of the Ice fountain is based on a photo by Erik Koch, taken during the legendary winter of 1963, when even the North Sea was frozen. The extent to which the fountain forms ice depends on the amount of energy generated by solar panels that are part of the artwork. Residents of Dokkum can also add panels for their household, for which an energy cooperative will be founded.

The Ice fountain is designed for the Markt in Dokkum and is surrounded by swamp oak (Quercus Palustris). The Markt is a site steeped in history where, it’s said, the followers of St. Boniface are buried. Boniface felled the Sacred Oak that was worshipped by pagan Frisians. The trees remind us of this history and the martyrs, and the leaves turn blood-red in the autumn.”
