De Duitsers hadden ter voorkoming van een landing, zoals in Normandië plaatsvond, de kust, ook bij Harlingen, op vele manieren "beschermd".
Een landing bij de Harlinger haven leek aannemelijk en daarom werd de stad aan de landzijde omgeven met Luftlande-hindernisse (obstakels die het landen van vliegtuigen onmogelijk maakten), Panzer-sperren (tankmuren) en mijnenvelden. Ook kon de spoorlijn worden gesloten.
Bij de ‘bescherming” aan de zeezijde werden onder meer 'Vorstrand Hindernisse', een constructie met drie poten van beton en ijzer waarop een ijzeren spiraalpunt was geplaatst, gebruikt. Deze "driepoten" werden in de zee geplaatst en staken bij eb boven het water uit maar waren bij vloed (hoog water) niet te zien. De bedoeling was dat bij een eventuele invasie de geallieerde landingsboten hierop vast zouden lopen.
Op deze plaats was een opslagplaats van deze driepoten op de haven.
Harlingers waren, ondanks de waarschuwingsborden ter plaatse, kennelijk niet zo onder de indruk van de mijnenvelden. Reden voor de NSB burgemeester door middel van aanplakbiljetten in de stad er voor te waarschuwen en met hechtenis te dreigen bij overtreden van het verbod om de gebieden te betreden.
Harlingen werd in de oorlog ook regelmatig door de Duitsers van de buitenwereld afgesloten, bijvoorbeeld als de Duitsers een landing of parachutisten verwachtten.

By 16 April, the major part of Friesland had been liberated. But some important targets of the Canadians had not yet been achieved. They wanted to win the Frisian ports and the Head of the Afsluitdijk from the Germans as quickly as possible. But they would be hard fought. Both the ports and the Afsluitdijk were used by German soldiers to escape to North Holland.
As elsewhere in Friesland, the Canadians were helped by resistance fighters from the Dutch Domestic Armed Forces (N.B.S.) They suffered several casualties near Makkum. On 16 April, Schelte Bruinsma and Simon Sipma were killed in an attack on a farm in which the Germans had entrenched themselves. The next day, another group tried to occupy a bridge under Makkum. However, the Germans caught sight of them and in the ensuing gunfight, Rinnert Anema, Roelof van der Meer and Hendrik Postma were killed. Makkum was liberated on 18 April, as one of the last villages in Friesland.
The monument at the Buren in Makkum was unveiled in 1952 in commemoration of the members of the Dutch Domestic Armed Forces who were killed around the village during the struggle for liberation.
