The farmyard also features a rare glass potato sprouting house, where seed potatoes were pre-sprouted under controlled conditions before planting. Only a small number of these distinctive buildings have survived to the present day.

Fishing once took place here along the Ried, and swans were kept in the surrounding wetlands. The exclusive right to hunt swans was a valuable privilege and provided an important source of income for centuries.
In the past, the Frisians fought the sea by building dams. As a result, a marshy area developed north of Wijnaldum. The former tidal channel known as the Ried formed its southern boundary.
