The village harbour was once located at the Hearewâltsje. This was the home of peat skipper Jan Lampe, owner of a snikke—a traditional Frisian cargo boat used to transport goods to nearby towns and villages.
In the past, Wijnaldum had a thriving local economy with a variety of shops and skilled craftsmen. Goods reached the village by both road and water. A small harbour once stood here, where cargo boats unloaded goods, including peat. Through the Ried waterway, the harbour was connected to Franeker, making Wijnaldum an important link in the region's trade network.

Just behind the sea dike lies Balkland Park. In the past, this was where timber rafters processed wood transported from Scandinavia. Later, the area was transformed into a sports park. Today, Balkland Park is a pleasant place to walk, exercise, and enjoy nature.
Birds in the Park
Thanks to its varied mix of trees, shrubs, grasslands, and water, the park provides an attractive habitat for many bird species. The colourful European goldfinch can be seen here throughout the year, especially among the teasels. In spring, songbirds such as the chiffchaff, willow warbler, and Eurasian blackcap fill the park with their songs. During summer, flowering plants, butterflies, and dragonflies attract attention, while in autumn you may spot woodpeckers, European robins, and goldcrests. With a bit of luck, you might even catch sight of a common kingfisher, common kestrel, or Eurasian sparrowhawk.

Heavy shelling on Pingjum
After the liberation of Sneek on April 15, 1945, Canadian troops advanced to the Afsluitdijk. The Frisian resistance advised against the attack. It remembered the May days at the beginning of the war in 1940.
After the Canadians had been festively welcomed in Leeuwaren, it was important to advance quickly to Franeker to prevent the last escape option of the Germans over the Afsluitdijk and the IJsselmeer. The attack against the Afsluitdijk was launched from the southeast on 16 April, but the tanks of the Queens Own Rifles soon ran into the strong German defenses.
After that, the village of Wons was surrounded, but the Germans defended themselves very fanatically at Pingjum. There were many snipers and the Canadians were fired on from the farms. Allied fighters and artillery were deployed to break the German resistance. During the shelling, five farms went up in flames, six civilians, one Canadian and 46 Germans were killed. On April 18, 1945, the Canadians were able to report that the entire area had been cleared of enemies.
