With the performance ‘ACQUA FORTE Parade’, the theatre-makers will transform Leeuwarden’s city canal along the Noordersingel into a magical dreamscape that stimulates all the senses.

ACQUAFORTE Compagnie – formerly known as Ilotopie – has its roots in the Camargue, a wetland area in the Rhône delta in the south of France. Rivers, lakes and the sea, together with wooded areas, form what the theatre company itself describes as reservoirs of the imagination. They take audiences on a journey through unspoilt waters and landscapes into a world of imagination.
ACQUAFORTE Compagnie has been performing around the world for decades and is internationally recognised as a leading pioneer in water-based (street) theatre. With large-scale water parades, installations and performances, the company transforms everyday waterscapes into fantastical scenes. Actors walking on water, floating objects, lighting effects and music combine to create an experience unlike anything audiences have seen before.
An ‘aquatic parade’ in the Prinsentuin with a touch of Mata Hari
ACQUA FORTE Parade is no ordinary parade. Over a 300-metre stretch, dreamlike scenes unfold on both sides of the route. With spectacular lighting effects on the water, floating fire and accompanying music, the audience is transported into Ilotopie’s imaginary, enchanting world. Especially for Leeuwarden, and to mark the 150th anniversary of her birth, the legendary Mata Hari will feature as a special element in the parade.
In the run-up to ACQUA FORTE Parade, the company will pop up at various locations throughout the city centre with surprise performances. The spectacular water parade takes place from 9 to 11 October 2026. ACQUAFORTE Compagnie can be seen on the northern city canal, from both the Noordersingel and the waterfront in the Prinsentuin. The event is free and suitable for all ages.
Find yourself a good spot along the route, roll out your picnic blanket and enjoy the spectacle from the water’s edge. In the Prinsentuin, you’ll find a lively food area offering snacks and (hot) drinks. Or feel free to bring a well-stocked picnic basket, or combine the performance with a bite to eat in the city before or afterwards.
