With ACQUA FORTE Parade, the theatre-makers transform Leeuwarden’s city canal along the Noordersingel into an enchanting dreamscape that stimulates all the senses.
Ilotopie
Ilotopie – which will be known as ACQUAFORTE COMPAGNIE from next year – has its roots in the Camargue, a wetland region in the Rhône delta in the south of France. Rivers, lakes and the sea, together with wooded landscapes, form what the theatre company itself describes as reservoirs of the human imagination. Through a world of fantasy, they take audiences on a journey across unspoilt waters and landscapes.
Ilotopie has been performing around the world for decades and is internationally recognised as a leading pioneer of water-based street theatre. With large-scale water parades, installations and performances, the company transforms everyday waterscapes into extraordinary theatrical scenes. Actors walking on water, floating objects, lighting effects and music combine to create an experience unlike anything audiences have seen before.
An ‘aquatic parade’ in the Prinsentuin with a touch of Mata Hari
ACQUA FORTE Parade is no ordinary parade. Along a 300-metre route, dreamlike scenes unfold on both sides of the water. Spectacular lighting effects on the water, floating fire and accompanying music transport the audience into Ilotopie’s imaginary, enchanting world. Especially for Leeuwarden, and to mark the 150th anniversary of her birth, the legendary Mata Hari will make a special appearance in the parade.
In the run-up to ACQUA FORTE Parade, Ilotopie will also pop up at various locations around the city centre with surprise performances. The spectacular water parade will take place from 9 to 11 October 2026. Ilotopie can be seen on the northern section of Leeuwarden’s city canal, from both the Noordersingel and the Prinsentuin waterfront. The event is free to attend and suitable for all ages.
