Dokkum - Sint Benedictuskerk church - Claercamp Monastery| Circular Walk 5 of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad Monastery Route
From the central market square in Dokkum you walk to Bonifatiuskapel, a Catholic chapel dedicated to Saint Boniface built in 1934. Although this beautiful chapel was built relatively recently, the Romanesque architectural features and traditional yellow bricks make it look old.
You walk along inner dikes in a southerly direction towards to Dokkum. You pass Rinsma State country house and estate and continue on to the village of Damwâld and Sint Benedictuskerk Church, which was an important station on the route between the monasteries near Smalle Ee, Rinsumageast, Burgum and Dokkum.

You walk along inner dikes in a southerly direction towards to Dokkum. You pass Rinsma State country house and estate and continue on to the village of Damwâld and Sint Benedictuskerk Church, which was an important station on the route between the monasteries near Smalle Ee, Rinsumageast, Burgum and Dokkum.
You arrive at the little village of Rinsumageast, which lies on a salt marsh ridge. Just north of here is the site of Claercamp monastery built in 1165. Claercamper Mar lake was created by the monks who dug out clay to make bricks. The monks also built the first modest dikes, dug ditches and constructed a sea lock in the Dokkumer Ee canal.
The slightly raised areas of land and the remaining canal ditches show that there was once a vast complex here to the east of Dokkum. But the buildings were torn down in 1580 during the Reformation. Keep going until you get to the little medieval church that still stands in the village of Jannum.
Cross the bridge over the Dokkumer Ee canal and continue along the meandering towpath that leads back to Dokkum.

Grote kerk of St-Martinuskerk Dokkum
De Grote kerk, ook wel de St-Martinuskerk gevestigd op de terp van Dokkum, aan de zuidzijde van de Markt. De bedevaartsplek voor Bonifatius, die in 754 bij Dokkum werd vermoord.
St Boniface Chapel
The 2.5-metre high memorial statue of St Boniface next to the St Boniface spring marks the spot where the saint died. Monastery stone was used to build a chapel near the spring to make this a place of pilgrimage.
Sint-Benedictuskerk Damwoude
De Sint-Benedictuskerk werd eind 12e eeuw gebouwd en in de 13e eeuw werd de toren toegevoegd. De kerk beschikt over vier bijzondere beschilderde schilden uit 1599, een vrijwel gaaf bewaard Hinsz-orgel en mooi gerestaureerde rouwborden.
Kloosterkapel Sibrandahûs
Prachtig middeleeuws kerkje waarvan wordt beweerd dat het een uithof was van het voormalige klooster Claercamp. Pelgrims kunnen hier voor een klein bedrag logeren.
Dokkumer Bolwerken
De beroemde bolwerken van Dokkum. Deze stadswallen vormden jaren geleden als verdedigingslinie voor de stad. Op zes punten bevinden zich bastions. Vanaf deze bolwerken heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de stad én de bijbehorende natuur.

Vanaf startpunt Markt naar knooppunt 31 en 62. Met gezicht naar Bonifatiuskapel linksaf, einde rechtsaf en vervolgens linksaf over rode brug (naar knooppunt 78).
Geelrode markering Elfstedenpad stukje volgen. Over Hoge Dijken, einde fietspad linksaf, direct rechtsaf langs Groot Diep. Einde linksaf fietspad onder brug door en weg vervolgen linksaf Wolddijk,
Rechtsaf naar Driesum over Dinzerbrug, door gehucht Wâldhiem, rechtdoor en na paar honderd meter rechtsaf voetpad langs elzensingel en sloot naar Dinzerleane. Volgen tot aan Driezum (38), voorbij Rinsma State (32) rechtsaf naar Rinsma Pôle.
Op 88 naar 53, in Wâlterswâld (43) rechtsaf naar Foarwei, linksaf naar Damwâld, volg knooppunt 46 - 37 - 75 voorbij Sint-Benedictuskerk, Foarwei aanhouden tot linksaf Fermanjepaad, vanaf daar Halerûte volgen naar 68. Op eind streekpad door nieuwbouwwijk naar hoofdweg door Akkerwoud (63), vervolgens na 66 rechtsaf door Geastmerbosk naar Rinsumageest.
In Rinsumageest Rjochthûsstrjitte, Stintzepaad naar de Alexander Kerk, terug naar dorp op 56 naar 51, op kruising Trekwei met Birdaardsterweg linksaf naar voormalig kloosterterrein Claerkamp (of rechtsaf naar kloosterkapel Sybrandahûs), vervolgens terug naar Dokkum via 18 - 32 - 38.
