Dokkum - Wouterswoude | Elfstedenpad Hiking Trail: Section 13

You start on the outskirts of Dokkum and wander through the old city centre, along the fortifications and past several markets.

After Saint Boniface was martyred, many pilgrims came to Dokkum to pay homage and drink from the sacred spring. The water was said to have healing properties. Dokkum later became an important naval base where the Frisian Admiralty was headquartered. For centuries, Dokkum had an open channel to the Wadden Sea.   

On your way out of Dokkum, you pass the Bonifatiuskapel Church in the northern part of the city as you head for the village of Driezum.

The trail leads you into the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden National Landscape conservation area, where you find yourself in unique countryside with meadows enclosed by rows of alders. The rows of trees help to increase biodiversity by providing shelter for many different kinds of plants, insects and birds.

The last part of the trail leads along a beautiful little path just south of the small village of Wouterswoude.
