Anjum - Peasens - Oostmahorn | Circular Walk 2 of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad Monastery Route

(14.6 km)

The church at the highest point of the village of Anjum is dedicated to Saint Michael and has served as the focal point of community life for almost a thousand years.

The village developed here because the people built a mound on a salt-marsh ridge to escape the influence of the tides and storm surges. This also allowed them to make good use of the fertile land around them.

In the distance, against a horizon formed by dikes, near Paesens and the old fishing village of Moddergat, you can see the salt marshes of the Peazemerlannen nature reserve. This is a wonderful glimpse of what the world looked like when the first Frisians settled on the salt marshes. Friesland is often said to be flat and empty but as you wander through the landscape you discover that this is not true.

This walk also leads through the village of Oostmahorn on the banks of Lauwersmeer lake. In the late Middle Ages the village was frequently attacked by pirates and built a fort to defend itself.
