Have you ever wondered how aristocratic families once lived? Find out on this historical walk as Dutch journalist and television presenter Jort Kelder leads you through the picturesque little villages of Olterterp and Beetsterzwaag and stops at several traditional country houses.
Jort: ‘On this historical walk I take you to the Frisian villages of Olterterp and Beetsterzwaag. Both have a rich history. From the 18th century onwards, members of the Frisian nobility and their families lived in this area. I explain how these villages and their surroundings were richly influenced by these aristocratic families and their lucrative investments in the region. During this walk through ‘the other Friesland’ we stop at several country houses and see how members of the nobility once lived in the villages of Olterterp and Beetsterzwaag.’

The starting point of this walking tour starts at Hotel-restaurant 'Het Witte Huis'. From there you walk on a narrow road towards the Alpherbosch & Grote Vijver. Then you continue the route through the forest towards White Lake.
This 11 km walking tour will bring you through the forest as well as through the center of Beetsterzwaag. All that walking requires good shoes. For a walking tour through the forest, we ask you to put on sturdy walking shoes. In bad weather, we recommend that you bring extra pair of wellies. Furthermore, the dirt routes through the forest are easy to walk. After a walking tour through the Hoofdstraat, you walk towards St. Hippolytuskerk Olterterp, this is also the last stop of this walking tour. Just like the start of this tour, you will walk largely through the forest. At the end of the walking tour, you will arrive at 'Het Witte Huis'.
