From Drachten, you follow hiking trails through a green corridor to the little Gothic church in the village of Kortehemmen. Kleastertsjerke church is a little monastery church that was built long ago by the nearby monastery in what became the village of Smalle Ee. A sandy path running straight through the forest for just over a kilometre emerges onto Schuinpad road in Oud Beets. This medieval village has almost disappeared and been incorporated into the village of Beetsterzwaag, which became popular among the Frisian nobility from the 16th century onwards. They built the country houses you can see all around you.
In the village of Olterterp the route takes you past the St Hippolytus church built in 1500 and Het Witte Huis hotel and restaurant. From there, it leads through a beech forest and past several ponds to the hamlet of Heidehuizen. The views from the trail through the Keningsdjip river valley are breathtaking. At the end of a lane lined with wooded banks you come to Sint-Pieterskerk in the village of Ureterp. This simple yet majestic church was built in 1250.
You eventually arrive back in Drachten where in the centre you can see the church built in 1743 and further on Museum Dr8888. From 1937 to 1970 this was a monastery. The Franciscan friars who lived here came to Drachten because of falling numbers in the congregation. When the monastery closed, it was converted into a town hall and later became a museum.
This 283-kilometre hiking trail through the province of Friesland is divided into 16 sections and takes you to the eleven historical cities and many picturesque little villages.
