Herbaijum Roaming Route
The little village of Herbaijum is surprisingly charming. Be sure to take some time to wander around the church. There has been one on this site since the 13th century. The little church you see today was built in 1872 in place of the medieval church that stood here before. The bell from the old church is on display in the church as a museum piece. The famous Frisian artist, Jopie Huisman, who lived in the village, is buried in the little graveyard next to the church. He died in the year 2000.

The café at the start of the route is run by daughters of Friesland’s most famous weatherman, Piet Paulusma, who has been living in Herbaijum for many years. The name of the café is ‘Oant moarn’, which is Frisian for ‘Until tomorrow.’ This is how Piet always ends his weather report.
This Roaming Route leads you from the village of Herbaijum to the centre of Franeker and through the panoramic Frisian landscape back to Herbaijum.
