Terband Heerenveen | Section 11 of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad Monastery Route
Setting off from the little white Terbandster Tsjerke church, you make your way back along Aengwirderweg road to the village of Luinjeberd,
where Mariënbosch monastery was established. After being relocated several times to avoid flooding, the monastery was eventually situated next to the graveyard. The bell in the bell tower is dedicated to Saint Boniface.
From here you continue on to the De Deelen wetland reserve. You ferry yourself across the Ringvaart canal and walk along the water to the other side of the A32 where Kapelle van Haskerdijken church awaits you.
This was where Maria's Rozendal monastery once stood. The hermit Dodo van Haske who died here showed signs of stigmata and was declared a saint. The monastery was destroyed by pirates, but Kapelle van Haskerdijken church still pays tribute to Saint Dodo van Haske.

You continue directly south and arrive at Heerenveen station. It was here that three local peat masters set up a company to buy land for peat mining. So the village came to be known as ‘heeren-van-het-veen’, which means ‘lords of the peat’. Over time, the name was shortened to Heerenveen.
