Castles and Gardens Tour

Day 1: Royal City Leeuwarden
Leeuwarden is a city of the Royal Family. From 1584 until their departure to the Hague in 1747, the governor of Nassau-Dietz, lived in Leeuwarden. Start your tour at the style rooms of Mary Louise van Hessen Kassel, the ancestress of the Dutch royal family. Thereafter, follow the trail of the Orange-Nassaus through Leeuwarden. Famous buildings were designed and either built or rebuilt for the governor, gardens were realized for summer walks. Follow their traces from the workplace to the gardens, and to their final resting place.

Day 2: Frisian Castles and Gardens
The country-side of Leeuwarden is a wide open landscape. The birds and flowers in this area are numerous. Visit two unique Frisian Cultural historic states Dekemastate and Martenastate, and the related estates. The naturalist guide explains the evolution of stinzen flora, the unique floral wealth in these estates. Friesland is proud of its churches, the Church of Britsum is very special and definitely worth visiting. This church and the interior dates from the 13th century and is located on the Frisian route of Camino de Santiago. Here you can enjoy a Frisian picnic and a high-tea. You will pay a visit to a unique flowery museum-home which is located in Birdaard next to the water the Dockummer EE. We will also visit the Ruurd Wiersma house. This naïve painter Ruurd Wiersma made his living room into a large colorful panorama. Walls, ceiling, furniture… nothing in the house escaped his brush. Thereafter, you will visit the still working and unique corn-flour mill in Birdaard. We continue our journey and will see the highest mound of Friesland Hegebeintum before we end our day at the mound village Marrum. This unique area is listed as the Wadden Area on the Unesco World Heritage list.
