Drachten is the capital city of the municipality of Smallingerland and is second only to Leeuwarden in terms of number of residents. Drachten only became a bigger village in the ‘50s, but it now offers a bit of everything. The growth is mainly due to the factory that Philips built in Drachten. The Drachtster Vaart used to flow through Drachten but it was closed at some point. The Drachtster Vaart has now been partly re-opened and water once again flows through Drachten.Drachten is located in a beautiful area where you can go for walks, cycle or take part in many other activities.
