Holwerd is a village of 1,630 residents in the municipality of Dongeradeel in the north of Friesland. Holwerd is the largest village in the municipality and is better known as the place where the ferry departs for the Wadden island of Ameland.
Holwerd is located along the Wadden Sea and many of the activities in Holwerd are related to this. Consider, for example, taking a tour of the tidal flats, walking along the mudflats or visiting the Wadden Experience Centre. Also in Holwerd is the European E9 walking route, better known in Friesland as the North Sea Trail/Friese Kustpad. This walking trail runs through several countries including Portugal, Germany, France, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands. This route is 750 kilometres long in the Netherlands and runs through Holwerd along the dikes and the tidal flats.
