Museum cycling route IJlst–Sneek–Joure

With this two-loop route you’ll discover four museums in Southwest Friesland, and possibly even more art and culture along the way. The ferry in Langweer keeps running on weekends in November.

You start at IJlst station and cycle to the historic centre of this Eleven Cities town. Right by the water, in a modern wooden building, you'll find the Houtstad IJlst museum.

Next, you follow a beautiful route along the water of De Geeuw to Sneek. There, the Frisian Maritime Museum awaits, where you’ll learn all about boats, water and ice.

After that, follow the water back to Sneek station and drop by the last museum of the day: the National Model Railway Museum. Then follow the Oude Hemdijk to cycle back to the starting point in IJlst.

Hobbe van Baerdt Church in Joure

This church is named after Hobbe van Baerdt, who, as ‘grietman’ (a kind of mayor), presided over the former municipality of Haskerland from 1615 to 1650. The lettering on the decorative pediment over the door says ‘Mr Gritman Hobbe van Baerdt 1644'.
