You and your bike can take the train to the famous Frisian city of Workum. And then it’s time to sail along on two wheels from Southwest Friesland to Akkrum station in central Friesland, with a helpful tailwind.

All kinds of lovely villages and cities will welcome you along the way, and you’ll need to use no less than four ferries to cross the water.

    Workum (or Warkum as we say in Friesland), is one of the famous Frisian cities that has enjoyed city rights since 1399. Located on the shores of the former Zuiderzee and bordering the Frisian lakes.

    For centuries Workum’s city arms on ‘De Waag’ have been supported by two lions. They are naive and their theatrical pose prompts laughter.

    On ‘De Merk’, you'll find ’Workum Cathedral’, Sint Gertrudis church. This is the largest late-Gothic cruciform church of Friesland, with the largest windows in all the province.

    Oudega is a cozy village situated on the Oudegaaster Brekken.

  • Ankertsjerke Oudega SWF

    Central in the originally medieval water village of Oudega, you will find the Ankertsjerke. Situated on a small enclosed cemetery right along the east-west axis along which the village originated. A lush ivy adorns the south facade in a thick green coat.

  • IJlst (Drylts)

    IJlst (or Drylts in Frisian) is not only one of the famous 11 cities, but also a 'wood city'. For many years, tree trunks were processed here by the legendary wood trading companies Oppedijk and S.O. de Vries.
