Through forests, moors, drifting sand and over the seafront along the Wadden coast, from picturesque villages to historical cities, across waterways by ferry, on islands and straight through nature reserves. Friesland is the Dutch province par excellence for cyclists. Moreover, we have been chosen as the best bicycling province of the Netherlands 3x in a row!
Friesland is fit for every type of cyclist, with our provincial bicycle network, culinary cycling routes past the eleven cities and E-bike accessibility.

As the number 1 bicycling province, Friesland has no shortage of biking routes to choose from. You can find a large selection of these on Friesland.nl by clicking on them. Another great option is to download the Routes Friesland Style app. With this app you can find ample routes throughout the whole province. Some of these routes will serve as a personal travel guide, as they will automatically tell you about your surroundings.

Electric bicycling
More and more people are purchasing an electric bicycle. Do you not own one yet, but would you like to try one out? Then grasp that opportunity in Friesland! Electric bikes are available at all bicycle rental companies, and as they allow you to cover larger distances, you will see even more of the province. For instance by going on the special e-bike route of 63 kilometres around the Tjeukemeer!
Bicycling on the Wadden Islands
If there is one place where a lot of bicycling is going on, then that would be on the Wadden Islands. Not only because these places are beautiful locations to go biking – to the beach, along the coast and through forests –, but also because you get there by boat and most people leave their car on the mainland. In fact: cars aren’t even allowed on Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog. So many people go biking instead.
Of course it is possible to bring your own bicycle on the boat, but you don’t need to. All islands rent out bicycles in all shapes and sizes. You can rent bicycles for ladies, men and children, with and without children’s seats, with or without gears, electric or regular, off-road mountain bikes, tandems and even (electrical) cargo bicycles.
