Cycling Holiday in Friesland
A cycling holiday is becoming more and more popular — and it’s easy to see why. From the saddle, you simply see more. You pass the most beautiful spots, places that drivers will never reach. Friesland is perfect for a cycling holiday: well-maintained and clearly signposted cycle paths lead you through a varied landscape. Ride along the water, cross by small ferries, and soak up the Frisian atmosphere with cosy B&Bs, local treats like oranjekoek, and the calls of meadow birds in the background.
Elfstedentocht
The famous Elfstedentocht in Friesland isn’t just popular on ice skates — you can cycle it too! We’ve divided the route into four stages so you can arrange your own overnight stays. A good tip: book accommodation in central Friesland for the week and cycle each stage from there. Three of the four starting points are accessible by train — a sustainable option. The Eleven Cities Cycle Route is fully signposted, so getting lost is impossible!
Elfstatentocht
Less known than the Elfstedentocht, but just as beautiful: the Elfstatentocht. This route consists of five stages that take you past eleven of Friesland’s most beautiful historic houses and gardens, known as staten and stinzen. Want to take a multi-day cycling trip and love culture? Then the Elfstatentocht is for you! The route is divided into five stages that can also be done individually. You can spread your cycling holiday over five weekends, taking your time. The best part: on each stage you can stay overnight in magnificent historic buildings — a treat for lovers of history and architecture.
LF Weekend Tours
No plans for the weekend and craving a unique experience? Grab your bike and take an LF Weekend Tour in Friesland! LF stands for Langeafstand Fietsroute — long-distance cycle routes that often cross half of the Netherlands. The LF Weekend Tours are designed so you can experience the charm of a full long-distance route, but in shorter loops following the cycle junction network. After two or three days of riding, you simply return to your starting point, ready to catch a train or drive home — a little tired, but full of memories. Book your accommodation in advance, as Friesland can be quite busy on weekends.

Frisian Waterline Cycle Routes
You may have heard of the Dutch Waterline — but Friesland has one too! During the Eighty Years’ War, an ingenious defensive line using water was constructed here as well. It stretched from the former Zuiderzee to the Groningen border, continuing all the way to Delfzijl, built to protect the northern capitals Leeuwarden and Groningen from the Spanish and other invaders.
If you’re interested in history, love scenic landscapes, and have a vivid imagination, then the Frisian Waterline is perfect for you. Many of the old schansen (forts) may no longer be clearly visible, but when you stop and explore, the stories come alive — like that of the dead oak tree at Bekhofschans, where, according to legend, soldiers were hanged.
The Frisian Waterline consists of three stages, which can also be done separately:
Goeie!
Don’t be surprised if strangers greet you with a cheerful “Goeie!” along the way. It’s a friendly Frisian custom — in the countryside, people still greet one another when they meet.
