Museum Walking Route Workum - Hindeloopen

With the help of this beautiful walking route, you'll discover 4 museums in Southwest Friesland. You walk from Workum station to the center of the Eleven Cities town, where you'll find the weighing house and the old town hall. These historical buildings of the Warkums Erfskip Museum are definitely worth a visit. Additionally, in Workum, you can visit the Jopie Huisman Museum: one of the most popular museums in the north.

Then, take a short walk along the locks and over the dike to Hindeloopen. There, the picturesque Hindeloopen Museum and the First Frisian Skating Museum await you. And if you've learned everything about the small Eleven Cities town, stroll on to Hindeloopen train station and take the train back to Workum station (or continue your journey home).

Workum Lighthouse

You'll find Workum lighthouse on the Hylperdyk at the entrance to the harbour. It's known as the Toarntsje (little tower), which is very apt for the square white brick tower.

Locks and the Sylhús

Hindeloopen is full of national monuments, such as the locks and the adjoining Sylhús. The locks were built back in the 17th century, and are the connection for recreational boats between the city centre and the harbour and the IJsselmeer lake.

KNRM lifeboat station

A particularly photogenic building and location is the bright blue KNRM lifeboat station on the dike in Hindeloopen. The old lifeboat station dating from 1911 has become a national monument.

Museum Hindeloopen

Three centuries ago, Hindeloopen grew into a major trading city. The city had a large fleet of 100 ships that sailed across the ocean. Hindeloopen is still an attractive city to visit. Many old characteristic properties are preserved.
